My Top 10 Podcasts For a Silent Night - Merry Podmas

My Top 10 Podcasts For a Silent Night - Merry Podmas

Tis’ the season to be… spending lots of money and consuming lots of ‘stuff’. Here’s a list of some the words, sounds and noises that I love to fill my brain with, that cost absolutely nothing but give oh, ho, ho, ho so much. There’s quite a few that I haven’t included, but I am proud of myself for narrowing it down - I like listening almost as much as I like talking. For each podcast I have included 3 of my favourite episodes - I’ll call these ‘highlights’, because I would recommend each and every episode of each and every show. Happy listening!

Deborah Frances-White may not have any children of her own, but as far as I’m concerned she is the mother of modern-feminism. She and her panelists have taught me so much about intersectional feminism and in many ways this podcast is my gateway drug to shaping my understanding of who I am and what I want to achieve. Highlights Apologising with Jo Caulfield Makeup with Pippa Evans and Poppy King Minefields with Reubs J Walsh, Leyla Hussein and Rev Kate Harford

Pandora and Dolly are the two best friends you wish you had. They’re intelligent, witty, beautiful and discerning. I adore listening to them demonstrate the multi-faceted nature, of not only the world, but also women. They are such great role-models and undoubtedly spark and inspire so many conversations amongst their listeners. The premise of the show is almost like a weekly news line up but including everything from politics to the Kardashians to their current favourite books. Ps. if you’re already an avid listener and can’t get enough, you can also listen to their old series ‘The Pandolly Podcast’. Highlights An Author Special with Renni Eddo- Lodge & the return of the Nokia 3310 The Travesty of Princess Diana’s Leaked Tapes & The Legacy of Celebrity Big Brother Women’s unconcious bias towards other women; and Kim Kardashian’s cultural appropriation

Adam is probably one of the funniest people you could have the pleasure of letting into your ears. He has an incredible way of creating a relaxed conversation with his guests, which are often equal parts funny and serious; he is podcast host goals. Each episode has random little jingles and even his adverts are bloody lols. Only con - lots of scatalogical humour, so if you’re not that way inclined - beware. Highlights Louis Theroux (they are bffs and it is the best thing ever, there are multiple Louis episodes, binge them) Tash Demetriou (again there is more than one ep. with Tash - she is laugh out loud funny) Simon Pegg (only one ep. with Simon but I feel bad because everyone else has brackets)

It’s your girls Tolly T, Audrey formerly known as Ghana’s Finest and mamacita Milena Sanchez ayyy. I love these women, they’re woke, funny and up for talking about anything and everything. They discuss race, religion, fuckboys, sex - pretty much everything to be honest. They also do a 'Your Receipts’ episode, where they answer questions/dilemmas that listeners have sent in, it’s f**king hilarious and also informative. Highlights I can’t come and die Beyond Twitter: A Lesson in Colourism (Feat Maya Jama) Your Problematic Fave

Dolly’s second debut on my list, because she is quite frankly person-goals. I love her voice, her candidness and of course, her memoir ‘Everything I Know About Love’, which is the reason behind this podcast. It came out during the promotion of her book (I wish she would do more), and it is really sumptuous and heartwarming stories with wonderful guests, about love in all its forms. Highlights Sara Pascoe (whilst we’re here you need to read Sara’s book ‘Animal, The Autobiography of The Female Body) Ruth Jones Vanessa Kirby

The mother-daughter duo of dreams. There is so much I love about this podcast, not least that Lenny and Jessie are hilariously raw, making their relationship so endearing and relatable. They have fantastic guests and delectable meals - but mostly I’m here for Lenny. I just love mums. Highlights Ed Sheeran Stacey Dooley Sadiq Khan

I know Russell is a little bit like marmite, and whilst I enjoy his highly-embellished language and him as a person, I often find myself disagreeing with his opinions and sometimes his guests. The podcast is fairly political and frequently contentious - I really enjoy that and it gets me thinking. Highlights Adam Curtis - Do We Really Want Change? Yuval Noah Harari - is Humanity Finished? (Also I loved all of Yuval’s books- Sapiens, Homo Deus and 21 Lessons for the Century) Senses & Consciousness- Beyond The 5 Senses Myth (with Prof Barry Smith)

Krishnan Guru-Murphy’s voice is soothing and familiar, which makes this podcast easy listening despite often covering more difficult and elevated topics. He is a fantastic interviewer and has some really fantastic guests. Highlights Laura Bates on talking sex and harassment in schools, positive action and tackling misogyny. Jameela Jamil on banning airbrushing, the Kardashians and her traumatic teens Darren ‘Loki’ McGarvey on poverty, personal responsibility and rap

The all time classic, loved by all the family. Kirsty Young is just all round goals and I hope that when I grow up I turn Scottish and patient. She has a way of speaking to people that is so calming and comforting, and all the episodes I have chosen are with her as the interviewer. Highlights Davina McCall Matt Smith Ed Sheeran
